One More Lesson

Robert H. Dirr Jr.

Once upon a dream, as I lay awake, I saw you and I holding hands
While sitting on an old wooden porch swing. The rusty squeaking
Of the suspended chaise lounge matched the arthritic rasping of
Our knees and other various joints of two elderly souls in love.

When I fell back to sleep, I realized I was only daydreaming again
And that you were never there, and hopeful wishing doesn't work.
I keep asking for your name and where you've been hiding, for I
Pray for your presence every night. Still, I have yet to see you.

I have known you all my life and even before, and I remember us
As lovers and friends and soul mates and partners through life.
My only request is that I find and hold you with these spindly and
Weakening arms because I never wanted to grow old by myself.
